Adoption & Guardianship Law

Adoption is one of the most joyful and challenging aspects of the law. Choosing an adoption attorney is one of the most important choices to make in your decision to adopt.  This component of our practice was founded by John O'Connor, who is a member of the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys (also known as AAAA or Quad A). John has played an integral role in the development and evolution of Oklahoma adoption laws. Newton, O’Connor, Turner & Ketchum routinely handles state (DHS) agency and private adoptions, including stepparent adoptions.  We have extensive experience in both interstate and intrastate placements, as well as placements affected by the federal and state Indian Child Welfare Acts.

Guardianship is the process by which court-supervised administration is appointed to an individual to act as legal guardian of a minor or incapacitated adult (the ward). A legal guardian is responsible for the care, custody and control of the ward and in some instances; this may include protection and care of the property or assets of the ward under guardianship.

The dissolution of rights, the appointment of rights and the protection of rights in adoption law and guardianship law have serious and long-lasting consequences on all parties involved.

Newton, O’Connor, Turner & Ketchum provides meticulous attention to detail and has comprehensive knowledge of the laws surrounding adoption and guardianship. Our experience is critical to seeking what is in the best interest of the adoptive child or the legal ward.
